Apex another working title for Godzilla vs. Kong, is an American science fiction monster picture set for release in 2021, after Legendary Pictures' Godzilla: King of Monsters in 2019 and serving as a prequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla vs. Kong has a rocky development, first scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, then being moved back to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally to May 21, 2021. It was then rescheduled for March 26, 2021, before finally arriving in American cinemas on March 31, 2021. Additionally, the film was streamed simultaneously on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

However, when Jia comes to Kong and gives him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he is inside the biodome, quickly throws a tree at it.

A Pensacola Apex facility seems to be under assault by Godzilla just as employee Bernie Hayes, the presenter of a Titan conspiracy theory podcast known as the Titan Truth Podcast, has completed uploading material revealing suspicious operations there. In the aftermath of the attack, public opinion has turned against Godzilla, who is no longer viewed as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now grown up and a fan of Bernie's podcast, sees the news about Godzilla's recent attack at her school and is worried. After school, she tries unsuccessfully to talk sense into her widowed father Mark (who is acting as Monarch's director), regarding a possible lead on the cause of Godzilla's rampage, but he dismisses everything she says as he only replies that creatures, just like people, can change. Later, Madison enlists the help of her best friend Josh Valentine to investigate the one behind Godzilla's rampage and figure out the secrets of Apex.

Nathan travels to Skull Island, where he meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews. Nathan proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to guide them to the Hollow Earth, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Ilene Andrews agrees, and the two of them set out to find the energy source. Though Ilene initially refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees after being persuaded by Nathan that they must undertake this mission in order to halt Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home on the mainland.

With no other choice, Nathan determines the gang should instead shut off the ships' power to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong was vanquished, which finally occurs successfully. Godzilla swam away from the devastated fleet, assuming he had triumphed, after he spied on it for a while. Realizing that Godzilla would show up again if they restart their ships, the crew changes course and instead flies Kong to the spot where Ghidorah was initially trapped in the Hollow Earth in Antarctica instead of their original intention. There, Jia tries to get Kong to follow him to his house, but he refuses.

Upon finding Bernie, Madison and Josh realize that he is Mark's daughter and he joins them in their investigation. The "eye" Bernie had previously indicated has gone from the Apex headquarters. The group mistakenly sealed and moved Skullcrawler eggs to Hong Kong through an underground conduit.

A similar habitat to Skull Island exists within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by two Warbats, one of which destroys one of the HEAVs while exploring the area. Kong saves the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second, which staggers it, but it recovers and constricts itself around him, causing him to fall. Prior to suffocating Kong, Nathan's team's HEAV attacked the Warbat, allowing Kong to escape and pummel the monster to death before munching on its intestines.

A magnificent stone temple belongs to Kong's forefathers, Kong and Nathan's squad begin their trek. On their way inside, they discover relics of an old battle between Kong and Godzilla's race, and Kong discovers an antique axe crafted from a dead Godzilla's race member's dorsal plate. This power source may also replenish Kong's axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew utilize spider-like drones to collect the power source and send it back to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia's guards fire at Nathan's crew, but Kong passionately screams back. When Godzilla detects Mechagodzilla's activation, he rushes for Hong Kong.

Godzilla recovers and gets to his feet as he hunts for Kong on a nearby structure. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above and puts him in a chokehold, attempting to strangle him. This is done to divert Godzilla's attention away from the battle. Godzilla, on the other hand, manages to break free and unleash his entire rage on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slicing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to pull Godzilla off of him by pounding his damaged leg with his right hand. In response to his vanquished opponent Kong, Godzilla roars angrily at him, who is restrained and held down.

As though inspired by Kong's fortitude and skill, Godzilla shows pity and spares his adversary's life before fleeing, leaving Kong alive but severely hurt, ultimately losing consciousness due to commotio cordis.

Back at the Apex headquarters, Walter enthusiastically instructs Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses his concerns and orders the mecha to be activated. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for breaking into Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison accuses Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and for all of this to happen in the first place, however he boldly argues that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

Because of the combined impact of the energy source and the Ghidorah's brain networks, Mechagodzilla suddenly goes berserk, slaying Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren, all while Walter is blinded in the process. Ghidorah's consciousness takes possession of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain in order to evade Godzilla. A rocket barrage is launched by Mechagodzilla at Godzilla before the two engage in combat.

Godzilla, despite having already become tired from his previous fight against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both firing their energy beams at one other which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to get the upper hand and push Godzilla down and burn him. Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices that his heartbeat is slowing down. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and severely beat Godzilla, the others approach an unconscious Kong. In response, Ilene explains that they are unable to generate a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart. However, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, Nathan flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

Sometime later, Monarch have created an observation post in the Hollow Earth. One day, Ilene, Nathan and Jia watch as Kong passes by on his morning walk. After signing "home" to Jia, Kong swings onto a cliff, pounds his chest and roars, declaring himself as the king of the Hollow Earth and happily embracing it as his new home and kingdom.

The film Godzilla vs. Kong has received overwhelmingly good reviews. Currently, as of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, with 254 of them being fresh. The film also has a "Tomatometer" rating of 74 percent certified Fresh, according to the site. On April 17, 2021, it was reported that despite still somewhat depressed box office due to the pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong had surpassed the total box office of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
